About The U.S. and the Holocaust

Inspired in part by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s “Americans and the Holocaust” exhibition and supported by its historical resources, The U.S. and the Holocaust examines the rise of Hitler and Nazism in Germany in the context of global antisemitism and racism, the eugenics movement in the United States and race laws in the American south. The series, written by Geoffrey Ward, sheds light on what the U.S. government and the American people knew and did as the catastrophe unfolded in Europe.

WGVU and a diverse coalition of partners will provide a variety of events to engage local communities around this PBS Ken Burns series. These events will include screening & panel discussions, educational resources for area schools and the Michigan Learning Channel, the creation of a virtual field trip of this area’s first-ever Holocaust memorial, Ways to Say Goodbye located at Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, and an exhibit opening September 18 at the Art Center of Battle Creek featuring The Holocaust Unfolds and From Darkness to Light.
