Congresswoman Scholten is a fourth-generation West Michigander, a mom, a Christian, and an attorney who proudly served in the U.S. Department of Justice. Her great-great-grandparents emigrated to the United States to find opportunity in West Michigan. Ever since, her parents, grandparents, and extended family have put down deep roots in this community—committed not only to building a better life for themselves and their families but devoted to creating a better community for all. Congresswoman Scholten now serves as the first woman and mother ever to represent Michigan’s Third District in Congress. She’s focused on providing responsive, effective, accessible representation that meets the practical needs of the district. This includes lowering costs of living, fighting corruption in government, securing critical infrastructure investments and eliminating transportation barriers in isolated communities, and fighting for West Michiganders’ fundamental rights at the federal level.

Diop Harris is a Battle Creek native, a citizen of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi, and a public policy professional with more than a decade of experience in organizing, advocacy, communications, and public service.
He earned a bachelor's degree in Public Policy from Michigan State University and has worked on political campaigns, grassroots organizing efforts, and national advocacy initiatives focused on consumer protection, economic justice, and government accountability.
Diop previously served as a legislative correspondent for U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, where he worked on infrastructure, economic opportunity, and constituent services. He currently serves on the board of the Share Center in Battle Creek, supporting efforts to connect individuals experiencing substance use disorders with housing, employment, recovery services, and other essential resources.

Phil Tanis served as Holland’s youngest mayor from 1987 to 1989. During his tenure, Holland’s downtown was renovated, and the snowmelt system was installed. He also served as Holland second ward city councilman from 1983 to 1987, leading the renovations of the historic Centennial Park.
From 1995 to 1996, Tanis worked for the International Republican Institute as a resident program officer in Sofia, Bulgaria, promoting democracy and training center-right political parties in campaign strategies and tactics. He was a volunteer consultant for the United Democratic Forces’ successful parliamentary campaign in 1997.
From 1998 to 2014 he worked for the Reformed Church in America in communications and operations. From 2014 to 2024 he was executive for communications and operations for the World Communion of Reformed Churches, based in Hannover, Germany.
Tanis is currently the director of Hope College’s Van Raalte Institute, which honors the memory of Holland’s founder through historical research and publications. Gretchen, his wife of 25 years, is a senior pastor at Hope Church in Holland.
