Byrne explains the strategy is part science and economics. It would take10 times the amount of salt to melt off that slick glaze at temperatures hovering around zero than what it would at 20 degrees.
“We have been putting down a mixture of sand-salt down to kind of break that shine on the packed snow if you will. And that’s really what we’re trying to give the motorist is a decent condition to drive in, not the greatest, I would much rather see it burned off and have dry pavement but the reality is we can’t give it that when it’s five degrees and a wind chill of 30-below because just like your skin refreezes so does the pavement. You get the pavement wet it’s going to refreeze.”
