Michigan Senate votes to change venue for state suits

davidgaddy.com

October 30, 2013 | AP  Republicans say moving cases from the Ingham County Circuit Court to the state Court of Appeals would spread the workload across the state. Democrats say it's a political move because Ingham judges have been overturning laws approved by the Republican-controlled Legislature and Gov. Rick Snyder.

High courts with conservative judges have tended to reverse those rulings in favor of the state.

The bill approved 26-11 Wednesday now goes to the Republican-led House.

Ingham County is reimbursed for costs incurred in handling Court of Claims cases. Under the legislation, the appeals court would become the first stop for Court of Claims cases. Four appeals judges would hear cases.
