Caught up in
a life of alcoholism and despair, “Brian” reached rock bottom before taking a
long, hard look at his addiction. Fourteen months ago, at the age of 45, living
alone in a sleazy hotel and at the end of a two week drinking binge, he was in
his words “existing” but in reality, “dying”.
Unaware of what day of the week it was,
the former all-conference division-one basketball player and college grad could
not even stand up to get himself a glass of water. He lost his job, his family,
self-respect, faith and direction. Fumbling in desperation for the phone, Brian finally
managed to punch in the numbers for The Guiding Light. On the other end: the mission’s Executive Director, Stuart Ray.
His advice? “Get here.”
His second visit to the mission, the staff was apprehensive about whether
this time Brian was serious.
