Paying for road and bridge repairs a bumpy ride for Governor

It's a line from a 1971 oil filter commercial, “If the guy who owned this car had put four bucks into one of these when he had his oil changed chances are he wouldn’t be putting $200 bucks into one of these.”
“Because if you don’t spend that money, your engines going to seize up and you’re going to spend how many times more with an engine rebuild”
While he’s no Mr. Good Wrench, for Governor Rick Snyder investing in roads and bridges is like that old FRAM Oil Filter commercial.
“You can pay me now, or pay me later.”
For the governor, “pay me now” is a $12 billion dollar infrastructure repair over ten years. If nothing’s done now, Snyder warns the “pay me later” repair bill will cost taxpayers $25 billion.
During his State of the State Address earlier this year he proposed we all pay a few dollars more through a wholesale fuel tax and increase some registration fees to pay for it.
“If we make this investment it will create thousands of jobs, will reduce vehicle repair costs and save lives.”
But again, it comes back to funding and a resistance lawmakers have to new taxes or fees. Snyder is out drumming up public support while asking lawmakers from both sides of the isle to present funding ideas that could be included in the upcoming budget.
“And let’s sit down and have a discussion then once everyone puts their solution on the table to say here’s what makes sense and work through something.”
If a revenue stream can be achieved, a Commercial Corridor Fund would be established for helping local municipalities pay for major trunk line repairs. Patrick Center, WGVU News.
