October 5, 2012 | MPRN Every public school has to display a U-S flag, but there’s never been a law requiring one in every classroom. The state is not providing money for flags. But some veterans groups say they’ll help schools that can’t afford them.
Michigan will join 43 other states that have some kind of requirement that students be allowed to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. But students won’t have to recite the pledge if they or their parents object. The measures cleared the Legislature with little controversy, although some people said the policies would be better left to local school boards.
The new rules will take effect with the start of the 20-13 school year.
