Behind The Mic

Patrick Center joined WGVU in December, 2008, after eight years of investigative reporting at Grand Rapids' WOOD TV8 and three years at WYTV News Channel 33 in Youngstown, Ohio. As News Director, Patrick manages our daily news operation. An award winning reporter, Patrick is an EMMY Award nominee and was named Best Individual Reporter by the Michigan Associated Press and presented with the Best Individual Reporter Merit Award by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. . He remains loyal to his boyhood professional sports teams: Cleveland Indians, Browns and Cavaliers. Although he grew up in the "buckeye" state, he has fallen in love with the people and natural resources of West Michigan.
   
Shelley Irwin hosts and produces The WGVU Morning Show from 9-11 a.m., featuring a wide variety of local and national newsmakers plus special features. Shelley also hosts the PBS Community Affairs programs Ask the Expert and Community Connection. She has been honored with five consecutive AWRT Gracie Allen Awards for Outstanding Individual Achievement as Program Host. Shelley is active in the community, and keeps busy in her spare time, including training for marathons and chasing after her two dogs.
   
David Moore is the local host of WGVU's Morning Edition, and has been waking up West Michigan since 1987. Originally from Detroit, he's a career journalist who has been in radio since 1974. He is also the station's religion reporter and covers a wide range of news stories, in addition to anchoring newscasts for Mid-Day West Michigan. He served aboard two aircraft carriers in the US Navy and worked with American Forces Radio. He and his wife Gina, both dog lovers, live in Wyoming and hope to someday operate an animal sanctuary. Lindsey Smith reports and produces West Michigan news pieces for WGVUs local FM and AM broadcasts. She also serves as a regular panelist on WGVU-TVs West Michigan Week and coordinates the internship program in the news department. A graduate of Eastern Michigan University and Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts, Lindsey started at WHMI in Howell, Michigan, where she won numerous awards for her work.
   
Scott Vander Werf is WGVU Radio's Music Director and Arts and Entertainment Editor. Producing the "World Music Caravan," "Classic Jazz Sunday" and Prime Time Jazz beginning every weeknight at 7p.m., Scott also hosts "All Things Considered - West Michigan" and contributes movie reviews on "Mid-Day West Michigan." Born in Michigan, Scott attended Western Michigan University, Southern Illinois University and Aquinas College. He created "The Electric Church" on GRTV, and has published numerous articles, reviews and interviews on books, music and films.
