Artists with disabilities showcase art in professional gallery

disabilities have been busy submitting their work to the ACTion Art or a chance
to showcase their creations in a professional art gallery at ACT’s
headquarters. Each artist can submit up to three pieces of artwork.ACT
Executive Director Michelle Suchovsky says artists are coached on
how to market and sell their work.
"When we started looking at this show and what we wanted to do, what we heard from all of the artists - whether they had disabilities or not were some really common themes of feeling isolated."
part are eligible to receive two different awards: The ArtPrize Sponsorship
Award ..where three winners will be selected by a juried vote, and compete in
ArtPrize 2013, as ACTion ArtPrize artists. The second is the People’s Choice
Award where one winner will receive this award at the end of ACTion ART, with
public community voting taking place throughout the exhibit.
The artists have unique life stories behind their creations - including
Randy who is confined to Metro Health Hospital’s assisted breathing unit.
"What I think is really moving is that this is so real - this could happen to all of us. He went hunting, fell out of his deer blind and wasn't found until the next day. He is now paralyzed from the neck down and now lives at Metro Health's Assisted Breathing Unit."
Suchovsky says they started art program at Metro Health 4 years ago after
being contacted by the patient’s recreational therapist. ACT has helped
children at Mary Free Bed and also has a program at Spectrum Health.
Viewing hours for the artwork are as follows: Monday, April 8th through Friday, April 19 from
10am-6pm. Weekend Gallery Hours are Saturday, April 13, 9am-3pm and Sunday,
April 14, 1-4pm.
