Big Changes At Michigan Blood

knowledgebase-script.com

David Moore
November 20, 2009 | WGVU  Another effect of the recession, this one impacting blood donations.  It's getting more and more difficult to convince people to give the "gift of life."   And that's the major challenge for agencies like Michigan Blood, formerly known as the Michigan Community Blood Centers.

CEO Bill Rietscha says donations are off about 3.5 per cent compared with yearly growth during better times.  That's partly because blood centers depend a lot on corporate blood drives to keep their supply replenished.

Rietscha told  WGVU with the economy the way it is, "there are fewer people employed in those facilities, and secondly, those businesses are a little more reluctant to let us in during business hours."  And, he added, "people are a little bit more reluctant to drive and spend the time to do it."

On the bright side, Rietscha says they're continuing to expand their service area, moving into Kalamazoo's Bronson and Borgess Health Systems beginning next month.  Michigan Blood's statewide work force has grown to more than 1,000 employees and volunteers, Rietscha said.
