Kalamazoo Library Dropping Bookmobile To Save Cash

November 13, 2009 | AP The Kalamazoo Public Library started its bookmobile service in 1956 as a way to provide patrons with more convenient access to its materials and services.
In an effort to cut costs from next year's budget, the library's board of trustees has decided to park the bookmobile for good by June 30. The board is to meet Monday to discuss other potential cuts in the face of declining funds, including a decrease in property tax revenue.
The library's budget of $10.7 million includes $195,000 to operate the bookmobile. Library Director Ann Rohrbaugh says if the service were to continue, the vehicle would need to be replaced at a cost of $250,000 to $300,000.
She says about 600 patrons have used the bookmobile this year. ---
