Grand Rapids City Manager Announces Big Layoffs Coming
November 6, 2009 | WGVU Grand Rapids City Manager Greg Sundstrom announced this morning that 150 city workers will lose their jobs soon as part of the city's cost-cutting effort to close a deficit in the general fund that has grown to $27.4 million for the 2010 fiscal year that starts on July 1.
"Almost all 150 layoffs will come from the general fund," he said. "It will create a balanced budget for the city for the next 19 months."
Sundstrom said he would make an official announcement on the layoffs and other moves the city will take to balance the budget on Tuesday. He also said the upcoming layoffs are likely to be the largest in the city's history. The city currently employs about 800 workers.
