WGVU Community Connection

New episodes air the first Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. and repeat the following
Sunday at 5:30 a.m.

WGVU’s newest series, Community Connection, offers an educational and informational spotlight on non-profit agencies in West Michigan, as host Shelley Irwin talks face to face with area non-profit leaders.

Discover the unique opportunities for community participation within the non-profit establishments and the lives of those who have been touched by the offerings of non-profits.

The series also includes a weekly and monthly community calendar, providing the viewer timely information of area events and happenings.

Celebrating and promoting public awareness of the many non-profit opportunities in West Michigan, Community Connection hopes to inform the viewer about opportunities to become a part of this community.

WGVU Family Health Matters

 

For more than a decade, Family Health Matters on WGVU’s Health Care Theme Nights has offered an in-depth examination of health issues affecting people in West Michigan.

Programs deal with such topics as cancer, mental illness, stroke and eating disorders, often with stories told through the eyes of people who suffer from the ailment being discussed.

Each theme night features programs on the topic along with a live, in-studio panel discussion with local experts and professionals. Viewers can call in to ask questions or to share their own outlooks and stories on the air.

Often touching and always informative, this series brings a personal aspect to health issues that affect millions of people every day.

LIVING WITH MIGRAINES
At some point of our lives, we all seem to get what we feel is a headache or a migraine, but for some- migraines can be a debilitating condition that has daily complications. In addition to the pain and discomfort, migraine headaches can keep sufferers up in the middle of the night, making them feel tired and lethargic the next day. A more intense type of headache called cluster headaches…sometimes known as suicide headaches because of the withering nature of the pain…are far less common but much more debilitating. In this program we explore the many types of treatments for these headaches…some have been around for a while, and others are fairly new.

ALL IN THE SAME BOAT: STORIES OF BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS
ALL IN THE SAME BOAT is about a dragon boat team whose members are all breast cancer survivors, and how that "twist" in their lives prompted them to embark on a journey "all in the same. " Save Our Sisters (SOS) is the only breast cancer survivors' dragon boat racing team in Miami and consists of an extraordinary team of women, from diverse backgrounds and ages. The inspirational story begins as the team trains for their biggest dragon boat race yet - The Breast Cancer Survivor World Cup Championship in April 2009. The stories of courage, hope and friendship will unfold as the team prepares for this challenge and their message is clear, it's not just a race to the finish line, it's a race against breast cancer.

DYSLIPIDEMIA: GETTING YOUR CHOLESTEROL UNDER CONTROL
Dyslipidemia occurs when there are abnormal amounts of lipids (fats) or lipoproteins (cholesterol) in the blood. This program will educate the audience about Dyslipidemia and Cholesterol Management and will focus on risk assessment (blood test, family history, imaging, etc.). The program will also discuss what patients can do to better assist their physicians in managing their high lipid levels and reducing their risk for cardiovascular and other diseases, including improving their diet, adding regular exercise, and other lifestyle modifications. The main goal of the program is to educate the audience on the treatment options available to them, and offer guidance about lifestyle changes that can help them lower their risk for serious diseases in the future.
