Imagine living on $30 a month for food. To raise funds and awareness for the Blandford Nature Center, Maria Gajewski made changes in her lifestyle for 30 days. We talk about the experience and this evening's celebration.
It's always good to spotlight talented West Michigan youth. 13 year old Patricia Schlutt, Crossroads Middle School eighth grader, has won the prestigious River of Words Environmental Art and Poetry Contest, with a trip to Washington, DC in store. We welcome Patricia and Mom Linda for the details.
The 5/3rd RiverBank Run is set to go Saturday and we talk about it. First up, Ironman Andy Holder joins TMS to talk about running with diabetes. Then, a Sports Med doc with Metro Health reminds us of the role his team plays on the day of the race.
Every month Dr. Alan Steinman joins us from the Annis Water Resources Institute to discuss the IJC Upper Great Lakes Study on water levels, which had a public meeting in Muskegon and an update on using water as an economic engine for the state.
On Tourist Talk with Promote Michigan's Dianna Stampfler, we take you around the state.
Coming Up
Only in America Series concludes Wednesday, May 14 at 10 a.m.
Three hundred and fifty years ago, in September 1654, twenty-three impoverished Jews arrived by ship in New Amsterdam after having been expelled from Recife, Brazil. Adding insult to injury, Governor Peter Stuyvesant tried to expel them when they arrived. They refused to leave, successfully appealing Stuyvesant's order to the board of the Dutch West India Company. However, they were not allowed to build a synagogue, serve in the militia, vote or enjoy other rights accorded to New Amsterdam's citizens. This was the less than auspicious beginning of the Jewish experience in America.
The documentary series Only in America shows the progress of American Jews from this trickle of poor immigrants to today's thriving community of six million. The episodes are organized around themes, historical periods and individuals that illustrate important aspects of this American Jewish history.

Common Threads
Common Threads was created 10 years ago as a coproduction of WGVU Radio & The Interfaith Dialogue Association (www.interfaithdialogueassociation.org). The mission of the show is to provide intelligent conversations with clerics, authors, journalists & lay members of the various world religions on topics that we hope interest the thinking public.
Common Threads is hosted by Fred Stella, President of The Interfaith Dialogue Association. Fred comes to this program with over 3 decades of broadcast experience & a lifetime of study in Religion & Spirituality. Among his accomplishments, Fred recently completed a 30-city lecture tour of India, where he spoke on the importance of preserving indigenous culture & religion. He has contributed articles & essays to several publications over the years; & lectures locally at churches, schools & civic organizations as well.
Since its inception the show has earned high marks from its guest, both local & national. In this age of “hit & run” sound-bite journalism, the ability to have a relaxed, nonconfrontational interview in the tradition of “Fresh Air” or “ The Diane Rhem Show” is a refreshing alternative.
Listen to Common Threads
Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on WGVU-AM
Sundays at 7 a.m. on WGVU-AM & WGVU-FM
Sundays at 3:30 p.m. on WGVU-AM
