WGVU Improving Global Health

The local project offers a replicable model consisting of the implementation of three categories of interrelated activities creating local to global links to improve health. The project will engage not only adults but educate children in West Michigan, our future leaders and world travelers, many who lack adequate nutrition and health care like their counter parts in other countries. The issues surrounding the lack of clean water, proper hygiene, medicine, and adequate nutrition, will be addressed through hands-on educational activities, fund raising, and a sustained “reading exchange project” connecting youth in West Michigan with youth in Nicaragua.

WGVU General Manager, Michael T. Walenta explains, “It is indeed significant that so many respected local and national organizations are joining together to embrace this critical issue. As our audience of active and engaged viewers learns more about child survival through our participation with this project, and through the Rx for Survival series that aired over the first three days of November, we know they will want a hands-on way to respond. By creating a campaign that leverages the strong health and community organizations existing here and by easy-to-access global health activities, we can fulfill our mission of educating and inspiring the citizens of West Michigan.”
